Ballet:
A classical dance technique which helps the dancer understand
and utilize their own physical weight and energies. We teach the
French and Italian methods. Ballet is a very structured style
which reinforces muscle stamina for balancing and especially turning.
This style keeps the dancer in a conditioned state for a long
time. The classical ballet dancer also learns to utilize their
turnout from the hip sockets to execute many steps of this style.
Pointe:
This type of ballet allows the dancer to move upon her toes with
special pointe (or toe) shoes. This is an extension of the classical
ballet technique for the older dancer. Girls age 12 and up are
allowed to go up on their toes as long as they've had 3 to 4 years
of ballet class training - an important rule at Ingrid's.
Jazz:
This style is more of a free flowing movement form. While it can
be structured, it allows the dancer to explore movement limitations.
Of the theatrical, hip-hop, musical theater and traditional jazz
styles, we teach more the traditional style with influences of
Gus Giordano, Fosse and Luigi. The dancer will learn to use the
parallel position of the feet and legs. We like to expose students
to other styles as well during the year.
Lyrical:
This is a very beautiful style that can can incorporate ballet
and jazz styles at once. The dancer's performance may tell a story
through the song or words of a song. Lyrical dancing is for the
more advanced dancer that can really express who they are through
movement. This style will teach the dancer the endless boundaries
of their movement skills.
Modern:
This style was developed to explore how far the body can move
in space and how the body will adapt to different energies and
levels. Modern dance does not necessarily have to tell a story
or make any kind of sense. The dancer can experiment with all
kinds of situations and movement themes. The skill of the dancer
has to be great in the sense of knowing who they are and why they
are a dancer. It takes an awesome skill of understanding your
center of gravity and taking hold of that to endless movement
possibilities. We teach Horton technique and expose the dancers
to improvisation and choreography. This particular class is on
an invitation basis.
Tap:
Tap is a fun style of movement. It requires shoes with metal plates
at the toe/ball and heel of the feet. These plates are sometimes
purchased separately and then professionally placed on the shoes.
The student learns a lot about rhythm and syncopating beats of
the music. There are many tap techniques such as Tommy Sutton
and Bojangles, to name a few. Hoofing explores with improvisational
skill in developing time signatures, rhythm and speed. We teach
basic steps to the beginner and hoofing to the more advanced student.
Creative
Movement: Creative
Movement is for 2 to 3 year olds. This is a half-hour class taken
once a week. The students learn about and become aware of their
space and body. We play lots of games dealing with movement and
hand-eye coordination skills. By the end of the year students
will know some of the numbers, colors and some ballet movement.
Combo
I: This class is for the student that has taken dance for
2-3 years. Combo I is for 5-8 year olds, is 1 1/2 hours long and
is taken once a week. Students will get a combination of ballet,
jazz and tap. Each student will perform a ballet, jazz and tap
dance for recital at the end of the year.
Combo
II: This class has the same criteria as Combo I but is two
hours long and adds basic tumbling to the dance styles taught
above. Each student will learn how to cartwheel, forward roll,
etc.
Hip
Hop: This aerobic style of jazz dance challenges the student
with syncopated rhythms, sharp arm, head and foot movement and
the need for stamina. Instructed by Keith Sutton.
